5 Sustainable Swaps: Low Waste Kitchen and Sustainable Eating

Our diet and the way we eat has a monumental impact on our planet and the people who live on it. If one doesn’t read the labels of our food to tell us where our asparagus was grown or realise the impact of plastic packing on our health and our planet’s health, how will we ever know our impact, let alone try to lessen it? You cannot learn everything overnight, it is a journey, and once curiosity has sparked, you’ll keep learning, and a sustainable lifestyle shall follow!

  1. Eat local food wherever possible.

Why care?

  • Imported food has a tremendously higher carbon footprint than what you can find at your local farmers market – from farm to plate is far more sustainable than from a farm in Mexico and a myriad of stops till it gets to your plate in London!
  • Local foods will always be seasonal foods keeping you in time with nature’s clock.
  1. Refill your cupboard at your local bulk store.

If you have a local bulk store, this is a simple, affordable and low waste way to fill your cupboards with your favourite legumes and whatnot. Invest in a few quality glasses jars or reuse ones you already have! Reduce plastic consumption and pollution, buy organic (most bulk stores stock organic ingredients!)

  1. Save your citrus peels for cleaners and marmalades!

  1. Beeswax or Soya wax Wrap > single-use plastic that pollutes Planet Earth throughout their entire lifespan.

Beeswax wraps (or soy wax) are a splendid alternative to plastic wrap. They last for years and can restore by adding more wax. When they can no longer be revived, they are compostable because they compose of cotton and natural waxes, both of which are biodegradable!

Why make the switch?

  • Plastic wrap will stay on this earth for hundreds, if not thousands of years, as a pollutant.
  • They can harm wildlife in numerous ways: trapping creatures with toxic compounds penetrating their habitats and ecosystems.
  • This land-originating problem is now a dilemma for our ocean system, rivers and the life that inhabits said places.

  1. Biodegradable cleaning tools like a loofa, dishwashing brushes, compostable sponges etc.

Why care?

Plastic sponges do not decompose without harming the environment and, or its inhabitants. Swap your plastic sponges for natural loofa, compostable sponges made out of a material such as wood pulp or a wooden or bamboo dish brush!
